Stick in the Mud Conservation is a small scale company of craftspeople based on the Solway.

We specialise in the conservation of historic buildings throughout North Cumbria and Dumfries & Galloway, with a particular expertise in the repair of clay dabbins and the use of lime.

We are passionate about our craft, with a deep knowledge and understanding of how old buildings work.

The Company is led by Alex Gibbons, who is a Fellow of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).

Alex originally trained as a Surveyor, and has a wealth of experience working on traditional buildings throughout the UK, France, Canada & The USA.  He regularly gives talks for The SPAB, and  several universities as a visiting lecturer.

Furthermore, Alex acts as a regional earth building Consultant to Historic Environment Scotland, as well as Carlisle & Allerdale Councils.  We also run courses from our Category A listed (Grade 1 equivalent) workshop in Canonbie.

We are able to guide you through the whole process of repairing your old building, from listed building consent to carrying out the work with our in-house team and network of skilled and committed craftspeople.

We are strong advocates of small scale business and and aim to maintain a high level of quality at a competitive price.  As a small company, we are not VAT registered, which enables us to offer high quality craftsmanship at an affordable price.

Please take a good look at our website and if you have any questions, or would like to discuss your project, please do not hesitate to contact us, we always like to talk!
